My name is Alison Kearney and I am an Associate Professor at the Institute of Education at Massey University. Prior to taking up this position, I was a primary school teacher, and a specialist teacher working with students who experienced difficulties with learning and behaviour. I am the Co-Director of the Equity Through Education Centre at Massey University. The vision of this centre is to promote equity, social justice and diversity in and through education. Professional Learning and Development (PDL) within the Equity Through Education Centre focuses on overcoming educational inequity experienced by those marginalised by personal and social circumstances (gender, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexuality, religion, language). Our courses acknowledge the powerful role teachers play in overcoming inequity and promoting presence and participation in life-long and life-wide learning.

I strongly believe in the concept of Ako – to teach is to learn – which leads to reciprocal and inclusive teaching and learning environments where learners and teachers feel safe, valued and empowered. Learning is a lifelong process that is based on principles of self- directed learning and contributes to individual’s well-being and empowerment. There is no doubt that technology offers exciting opportunities for 21st century teaching and learning and will be an increasingly important skill for all teachers/learners. Finally, education must be a vehicle for social justice – a way to ensure that all members of a society have access to the benefits and rewards of that society.

I have a particular interest in communities of learners, professional inquiry, inquiry-based learning and online learning.
