My name is Vijaya Dharan and I am a Senior Lecturer at Massey University. My personal belief is that every child can learn given the right opportunities, time, place and humanity. This belief has been the driving force of my professional practice and learning with issues of equity and social justice becoming natural default positions. When we start asking ourselves what is normal, we can see the world in a different light. As a team member of this research community, I believe that learning is all about for whom and why, which then dictates the what and how.
Having been a school teacher and a psychologist working with children and young persons with a range of learning and behavioural needs, I see professional learning as a collaborative venture – working alongside school communities and families and children – needing to listen, to understand and co-construct meaningful educational outcomes for all children. My professional learning and development support draws on:
Evidence based practice - Understanding what works for whom and why drawing not only on research evidence, but authentic voices of family/whānau, children and young persons particularly as it relates to Autism and Social Emotional challenges of children and young persons.
Inclusive Education – In terms of learning without limits, at spaces that students want to be to learn. Supporting learning communities to identify barriers to learning and supporting change.
Cultural responsiveness – Upholding the bicultural obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi in Aotearoa New Zealand and embracing the growing multiculturalism in our society globally
Collaborative and Consultative interprofessional practice – Working alongside family/whānau, educational staff, trans disciplinary staff and students themselves where possible.
So,let us question the notion of normal and ensure that education is for all learners , as we begin our professional learning conversations.
